The metabolic evolution of organic sulfates has been investigated using quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs) of 222 unrelated sulfur-bearing organic compounds with various biological activities. Extensive experimental data of 222 compounds and 222 reference structures, which were collected from the literature, were submitted to the QSAR study. The results suggested that biological activity is mainly influenced by two features of organic sulfates: (i) the aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon chain length and (ii) the structure of the functional group attached to the aliphatic chain. Molecular descriptors, such as polarizability (alpha), the volume of the receptor (V), the solvation parameter (delta(i)(v)) and the molar refractivity (R(m)), of the relevant hydrocarbon chain length and functional group were mainly correlated with biological activity. This suggests that the biological activity of organic sulfates is dominated by the structure of the functional group attached to the organic chain and the flexibility of the aliphatic and/or aromatic hydrocarbon chain.For the media
